Thanksgiving 2026
Thanksgiving, planned backwards from Thursday, Nov. 26
Short answer: A frozen 12 to 16 lb turkey goes into the fridge by Saturday, Nov. 21 (USDA: 24 hours per 4 to 5 lb). Buy for about 1 to 1½ lb of turkey per guest, plan the oven on paper, and refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of serving.
Every guide below answers one question people actually ask in the weeks before the holiday, with the numbers cited to USDA or the turkey producers and a note on what to skip. Where a tool genuinely helps (a thermometer, a roasting pan, shallow containers) the guide lists a few; where it does not, there is nothing to buy.
Key dates for 2026
| Date | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fri, Nov. 13 | Buy a frozen turkey if you have not (it keeps in the freezer). Confirm the head count. |
| Thu, Nov. 19 | A 20 to 24 lb frozen turkey goes into the fridge (5 to 6 days). |
| Fri, Nov. 20 | A 16 to 20 lb frozen turkey goes into the fridge (4 to 5 days). |
| Sat, Nov. 21 | A 12 to 16 lb frozen turkey goes into the fridge (3 to 4 days). |
| Tue, Nov. 24 | Shop for perishables. For a fresh turkey with no “use by” date, USDA says the Tuesday or Wednesday before is the earliest to buy. |
| Thu, Nov. 26 | Thanksgiving. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking. |
| Mon, Nov. 30 | Eat or freeze refrigerated leftovers by now (USDA: up to 4 days). |
